A biography/family history of Robert R. Black, farmer and ranchman of Valley County, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 951 & 952.

Robert was born, 29 Oct 1874, son of William G. and Rachel (Stever) Black, natives of Ohio and Pennsylvania, respectively. Ancestors came to the US from Scotland several generations ago. Children of William and Rachel Black: Moses F. (Creston, IA), Alleta (Mrs. William Laughlin, Blackwell, OK), Bessie (Mrs. R.W. Sanders, Hale Center, TX), John F. (Corpus Christi, TX), Mrs. Floyd K. Laughlin (d. Fairfield, IA), Guy (Roseburg, OR), Robert "Roy".

Robert R. was educated in Jefferson County, IA, and attended a business course at Washington, IA. In 1899, Robert located to Willow Creek, about 20 miles north of Hinsdale, MT, to engage in ranching raising cattle and Percheron horses. He eventually developed a ranch of more than 10,000 acres. In 1919, he moved to a farm three miles northeast of Hinsdale.

On 9 Nov 1912, Woodburn, IA, Robert R. married Miss Mary B. Wing, born Morris, IL, 3 Aug 1880, but grew up in Iowa. She was the daughter of Rev. F.A. and Elizabeth (Thompson) Wing. Children of Robert R. and Mary Black: Robert Wing, John Wing.
