A biography/family history of Joseph Bertrand is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2. His father, George Bertrand, was born in Quebec in 1823. He was a tailor by trade; married Genevieve Falardeau who was born in Quebec in 1829 and died there in 1907. George died in Quebec in 1859. Children: John; Odilon, d. in Quebec in 1904; Edmond died 1869, age 12.

Joseph was born 16 July 1854, Quebec. At age 15, he left school and became self supporting. He clerked in stores in Detroit and Chicago and in 1887 located to Lewistown, MT, where he worked for 9 years at the T.C. Power and Brother establishment, then in 1896 he set up business for himself in Lewistown. In 1905, he sold his business and moved to the new town of Roberts where he established a pioneer general store.

In 1889, Lewistown, MT, Joseph married Miss Margaret McCann, daughter of James and Sarah (Creighton) McCann. The Bertrands had 12 children: George; Margaret; Arnold; Helen; Bernard, Livingston, MT; Blanche, Boyd, MT; Dorothy; Frances; Esther; Irene; Geraldine; Julius.

The 1930 Federal Census shows Margaret, Age 52, born in Wisconsin, Widowed, Father's POB: Ireland; Mother's POB: MA; no occupation
Dorothy, daughter, Age 28, Single, POB: MT; Father's POB: Canada-French; MPOB: Wisconsin; Teacher, public school
