Bertrand, Ronald Joseph "Ronnie" "Ron" A memorial service will be held for Ronald Joseph Bertrand at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rayne on Friday, April 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. A Rayne attorney, he died at his home on Tuesday, April 4, at the age of 61. Considered by many to be an outstanding member of his profession, he thoroughly enjoyed the practice of law until his neurological illness caused him to resign in July 2004. Shortly afterward, Charles Plattsmier of the Louisiana Bar Association noted, "In this day and age, it is indeed rare to find an attorney who, having been in practice for over 30 years, has never had a disciplinary complaint filed against him." Ronald was born in Marrero and attended schools in Rayne, Starks and Lake Charles before graduating from Immaculata Seminary in Lafayette. He then completed a four-year course at McNeese State University in two years and received a scholarship to Tulane University, where he obtained his law degree. In addition, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a first lieutenant during the Vietnam War. He was married to the former Sara Short and was the father of a son, Michael. Besides his wife and son, Ronald is also survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. John Avery Bertrand of Crowley; three sisters, Linda and husband John Lambert of Baton Rouge, Darlene and husband Eddie Veillon of Lake Charles, and Angie and husband Ron Coleman of Ackworth, Ga.; four nephews, Scott Steib, Tony and Chris Gibbs, and Ronnie Coleman; four nieces, Summer Steib, Anne and Monica Veillon, and Anna Coleman; two great-nephews, Rowan Avery Castleman-Steib and John Avery Steib; and a great-niece, Anaise Parker Castleman-Steib. He is also survived by three aunts, Catherine and husband Dale Boudreaux and Corrine Thibodaux, all of Raceland, and Edna Bertrand of Jennings; and two uncles, George Theriot and wife Barbara, and Dave Theriot, all of Raceland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St., Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503 or The Society for PSP, Mayo Clinic, 4500 Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224.
