Am not related. May be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info but additional newspaper extracts may be found at URL: <http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php> Vern D ////////////////////////////////// Transcribed by Dee Sardoch; <deesar@frontiernet.net> ////////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Independent Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA ************************* >>WEDNESDAY, 26 NOV 1862<< RETURNED -- Mr. John BENNETT, for about 12 years a resident of this city, a printer by profession, who left for the northern mines in May last, returned yesterday morning from the John Day and Powder river mines. This gentleman says there is plenty of gold in the northern regions where he has been, and there is little doubt but the mines will prove permanent and as profitable in the end as they have ever done in the palmiest days of California mining. It is our informant's present intention to return again during the coming season. He speaks in the highest terms of the future prospect of the country he has visited, so far as mineral wealth is concerned, but does not praise the climate. He takes a practical view of everything, and as such, his views are favorable to the north. Grand and Powder river vallies are being settled very fast by people from the Eastern States.
