Asahel/Asael BENNETT was born about 1814 in NY, according to censuses. Probably spent some time in Ohio before going to Iowa Co. WI, where he married Sarah Ann Dilley in 1840. In 1849 the family headed for CA with 3 young children. They were marooned in Death Valley for several weeks after following a faulty map, and were rescued by 2 young men who were in their group.
In 1850 they were in El Dorado Co., later in Monterey Co., then San Bernardino after Sarah died. Asahel and 2 sons went prospecting. Daughters Melissa and Martha, my g-grandmother, married. Asahel finally remarried and died in Idaho.
I'd love to get some clue as to Asahel's family in NY, where there are far too many Bennetts for finding them to be easy. Can anyone help me break this wall down?
