Looking for Bennetts from Memphis, Shelby County or relations that lived there. I think I have pieced together the New England Bennetts to Shelby, via way of several of my great-grand uncles and cousins. My great grandfather was William W Bennett of Maine who removed to Boston in the mid 1800s. His brother Sylvester moved to Memphis, Shelby County in the late 1800s and was involved in the lumber business as were the Bennetts in Maine, Mass and prior. Several related family members also moved to Shelby Co toward the late 1800s as well... Namely - John A Bennett who married a Mildred from W. Va. - they had 4 children: Ethel A Bennett born around 1901 (who I believe was named after Ethel A Wedgewood - related to the Bennetts by marriage of the French family) - William W Bennett born around 1902, John H Bennett born around 1906 and Mildred G Bennett born around 1908. John A's father was John F Bennett and his mother was Emily - they had 6 surviving children out of 9 and remained in Massachusetts - from what I can tell. John A's wife Mildred passed away sometime before the 1920 Census - and by the 1930 Census only Ethel and Mildred (daughter) were living with him - not sure if the son's survived or if the daughters had any children. There is another offshoot of the Bennett family from NE that settled near Nashville around the same time. I would be interested to hear if any of these names rings a bell for you. What is frustrating for me is that I used to live in Tipton County, TN and could have looked up the records myself - I moved about 15 years ago. Thanks Karen Notify Administrator about this message?
