Ann (Witt) Barney, wife of Jacob Barney Jr., was the daughter of John Witt and his first wife -- name unknown. John Witt's 2nd wife was Sarah, whose surname we believe to be Rooles. I received the following Witt information several years ago from Marlene Ricci <mfricci@earthlink.net>:

JOHN WITT & Unknown UNKNOWN
& (2) SARAH ROOLES
Of LYNN, ESSEX
MASSACHUSETTS
Ca 1610- 1708

John WITT was born ca 1610 was “of Lynn, Essex, MBC.” John married (2) Sarah ROOLES. Sarah was born ca 1643 (New England Marraiges before 1700; she died after 1675. John married (1) Unknown UNKNOWN in Lynn, Essex, MBC. Mrs. Unknown WITT was born ca 1610 “of Lynn, Essex, MBC.” Sarah has been determined to have been Sarah ROOLES born in England. John died December 2, 1675 in Lynn.
New England Historical & Genealogical Register; Volume 5; 1851; page 342-343: “Witt, John, w. Sarah; chn. Martha, b. 5 March 1659; Thomas b. 25 July 1661; Ebenezer, b. 6 April, d. 30 June, 1665. One of his children married Elizabeth Baker, 14 June 1676; chn. Elizabeth, b. 9 Aug. 1677; John, b. 1679; Mary, b. 14 Aug. 1681.
History of Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts including Lynnfield, Soujus, Swampacott and Nahant; Alonzo Lewis & James R. Newhall; 1890:
Page 190. Chapter: Annals of Lynn
1640 John Witt- died December 1675. His children were Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Martha, John, who married Elizabeth Baker, 14 Jan. 1676, and Thomas who married Bethia Potter, 26 Feb. 1675, [John was great-grandfather of Thomas Witt, now living on North Common street, at the ripe age of 86—a gentleman of more than ordinary intelligence and constitutional vigor, and one who can number a large and respectable circle of descendants. He was a son of Benjamin Witt, who was born in 1739—which Benjamin was a son of Thomas, born in 1696 in which Thomas was a son of the before-named John, who married Elizabeth Baker. Some of the family, in other places, write the name DeWitt, as was the case with a late secretary of the commonwealth, and they adapt that orthography, it is understood, on the supposition that they are descended from the DeWitts of Holland, or from a Huguenot.]
This is an interesting conjecture about the family changing the name to DeWitt on the supposition that they were descended from the DeWitts of Holland, or from a Huguenot. One of the books written about the Witt family mentioned a short paragraph on John Witt of Lynn, Massachusetts. The book contains the family of DeWitt of Virginia. How would they ever come up with this guess is beyond me, unless there is some truth in this. This needs further investigation.
