Sarah A.’Sallie’ HEATH (b.ca 1839). She was born in Platte Co. MO.m. 1st 18 March 1858        Isaac ‘Jack’BABCOCK who died in 1859. Isaac Babcock was one of 6 children of Zabina Babcock b. 12 Sept 1798 VT d. 17 June 1854 Farley, Platte Co. MO., who married in Ohio Lucinda Dusthamer and came to Platte County MO in 1838, settling at the        “Narrows” where he formed a partnership with Phinehas Skinner, and kept a store. He        was a large and venerable old gentleman who died in 1854, his estate being administered by his son Richard Babcock.. His wife Lucinda died in 1874. Sarah married 2nd 19 Oct 1865 William H. ARNOLD b.ca. 1828 KY. d. Oct 1872 MO (Annals of Platte Co. refer to her as Sallie A. Babcock). William H. Arnold was described as a        genial, intelligent and energetic farmer and trader. The 1860 census shows Sarah Babcock living with her father James Heath in Pettis Twp, Platte Co. MO. with just one son, James W. Babcock, age 1. The July 1870 census has her living as Mrs. William H. Arnold and they are farming in Pettis Twp with many children at home except eldest Sarah W. Arnold, who has married. This was a 2nd marriage for William H. Arnold, and the older children were her stepchildren (Sarah Arnold, Mary E. Arnold, Rebecca Arnold). She did not marry William H. Arnold until Oct 1865 so they could not        be hers. In the        June 22 1880 census Sarah A. (Heath) (Babcock) Arnold is living as head        of household on a farm at age 39 in Pettis Twp, Platte Co. MO. Her son James W. Babcock has married and the couple are living in the household. In the June 7, 1900 census Sarah A. Arnold is found living in Leavenworth, KS at age 56 with her son        William H. Arnold. Also living in the household is her son George M. Arnold now 26. On        that census Sarah says she has had 6 children, only 2 still living. In the June 1910 census for Leavenworth Co. KS, Sarah is still living, enumerated as ‘Sally’ Arnold, stating she is 68 and a widow. Her son George M. Arnold is living in the household at age 37, single, and working as an engineer. Also in the household is a 12 year old granddaughter named        Fay Arnold born KS. Sarah (Heath) (Babcock) Arnold, widowed twice, had the following children and stepchildren:

Sarah Willmot ARNOLD m. 4 Oct 1869 Samuel Zabina BABCOCK b. 15 May 1847 d. 1 Jan 1936. He was the son of Charles Babcock b. 21 July 1822 Coshocton Co. OH and his wife Paulina Moore b. 22 Jan 1828 Jackson, MO. Charles Babcock was a brother to the Isaac ‘Jack’ Babcock who married Sarah A. ‘Sallie’ Heath. In the 1870 census they are farming ages 22 and 19 in Pettis Twp, Platte Co. MO. Samuel Z. Babcock appears to have married twice. He is in the 1910 census for Leavenworth, KS age 63, and says he is on 2nd marriage, his wife ‘Mary’ indicating it is        her first marriage. I believe his 2nd wife was Mary Elizabeth Naylor from Platte Co. MO, the daughter of Tilman and Rebecca (Elkins) Naylor. (From Platte Co. Historical book). He is still living in Leavenworth KS in the 1920 census with son ‘Robert’ age 37 and single in the household, as well as 22 year old Mabel. Could ‘Robert’ be Matthew Robert or Robert Matthew? The following children are in the household:
       Matthew BABCOCK b.ca. 1883 MO
Alva/Alvie (?hard to read) BABCOCK (son) b.ca. 1890 KS
Olie V. BABCOCK b.ca. 1893 KS m. Elsie unknown b.ca. 1895 MO to parents        who were both Danish. In the 1920 census they are farming in                      Leavenworth, KS. Their child:

Both buried Hampton/Hughes Cemetery, Platte Co.               MO.In the 1880 census they are living ages 30 and 23 in Pettis Twp, Platte Co.               MO farming two households away from her widowed mother Sarah.

James W. BABCOCK b.ca. 1859 m. 4 Jan 1880 Lurella ‘Bell’ NAYLOR b. 26 Aug               1860 Platte Co. MO. d. 5 June 1930 CA. (Marriage date came from Annals of               Platte County by Paxton is in error, he also had her name Luvella.) They were               married by Israel Heath, Justice of the Peace. She was the daughter of Paul Naylor b. 24 Mar 1831 Bath Co. KY d. 20 Dec 1898 Platte Co. MO and his wife Mary Elizabeth Hayes. Lurella Naylor was one of six daughters: Mattie, Delie, Maggie, Lavaria, Susan Iris and Lurella Naylor. I found this death notice for her father Paul Naylor:
Death Notice of Paul Naylor
Died, at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Henry Noland, December 20, 1898, of heart disease. Uncle Paul, as he was familiarly known, was born in Bath County, Kentucky, March 24, 1831, hence he was in his 68th year. He emigrated to        Missouri with his father, Ignatius Naylor, and family in 1848. His father entered on a tract of land near Waldron, in Platte County, known as the old Naylor homestead. this was in the early settling of the Platte Purchase.

Uncle Paul at this time was a boy of seventeen. He remained with his father until about 23 years of age, at this time the gold fever was raging in California; he being struck with the gold fever, determined to seek his fortune in the golden state. He joined a wagon train starting from Independence, Missouri, under command of William Clarke, and journeyed overland to California; arriving there, he worked in the gold mines for about three years, and returned home by way of the Isthmus of Panama to New York City, thence overland to the Ohio River, down the Ohio to the Mississippi; up the Mississippi to St Louis, thence up the Missouri to Parkville.

He married in 1857 to Miss Mary Elizabeth Hays; of this union there were born to them six daughters, four of whom still survive him. Bell, the wife of James Babcock; Mattie the wife of Fred Seltman, Delia, the wife of F. W. Hymer; and Maggie, the wife of Henry Noland. Susan, the wife of J. L. Simpson; and Lavaria, the wife of John Ellis, have preceded him to the better world. His wife died March 17, 1882.

Since he was seventeen, with the exception of the three years in California and about the same in Daviess County, Missouri, he has resided in Platte County. He was well and favorably known in Platte City, Daviess and adjacent counties. During the Rebellion he remained at home on his farm and endeavored to gain an honest living. Uncle Paul was the third child in a family of sixteen children, there being eleven sons and five daughters of whom the five sisters and four brothers               are dead. All but one lived to be grown.

Uncle Paul was highly respected in the community in which he lived and was noted for his honesty, integrity and many virtues. He joined the M.E. Church South, July 22, 1896, and since then lived a consistent Christian life. u
There is a James Babcock in the June 4, 1900 census for Leavenworth, KS but the        wife is listed as Julia and the dates of birth of the couple do not match.
James W. Babcock is on the April 18, 1910 census for Leavenworth, KS age 50,        his wife Lurella saying they have had 5 children, 5 living. The census is too poor to read his occupation. There were no children living with them. I believe their        children to have been:
Bert Gray BABCOCK b. 27 Oct 1880 MO d. 22 July 1949 Los Angeles Co CA
Otto I. BABCOCK b. 2 June 1882 MO m. ca. 1906 Annie CARROLL b.ca. 1886                      KS (both her parents born Ireland). In the Apr 20 1910 census they are                      living in Leavenworth, KS where Otto is working in healthcare insurance.                      They state they’ve been married 4 yrs. By Jan 1920 the family has moved                      to Washington Twp, Ames, Story Co. Iowa where he is still working as an                      insurance agent. Their child:
                     John F. BABCOCK b.ca. 1907 KS

Alice BABCOCK b. Sept 1885 m. Michael CARROLL
Ora BABCOCK b. 10 Aug 1886 m. James O’HERRIN
Mary ‘Mamie’ BABCOCK b. Feb 1888

Heath (Babcock) (Arnold) is living in his household at age 56, along with his brother George M. Arnold age 26. William H.
