Hiram Ghiles SHAFFER/SHAFER born 1859 Iowa d. 1939 married Dollie Varden ARNOLD born Feb 1869 IA. They married ca. 1892 most likely in Iowa and had their first child, a girl, Nora B. Shaffer in Jan 1883 in Iowa. At the time of their marriage Hiram Ghiles Shaffer/Shafer was 33 yrs old and his wife was 23. Not long afterwards, Hiram and his family move to Nebraska. When he recorded land in Nebraska it was as Shaffer, but shortly thereafter it became shortened to Shafer. (It is also likely that before Shaffer it may have been Schaefer, Schaeffer or various versions of that.) Although Ghiles Shafer is buried in Custer Co. NE, some of his children were living in Whitefish, Flathead Co. MT (Nora, Everett and Dolly Shafer) and there is a death record of a Jhiles Shafer for 15 Dec 1939 in Whitefish, MT. His body may have been shipped back to Custer Co. NE for burial.
They had 12 children--I'm trying to figure out who Dollie Varden Arnold was!
