Preston, Thanks for the article referral. My only comment is that Mr Russel's comments do not reflect the opinion of the Cherokee Nation nor of the overwhelming majority of Cherokee citizens who most recently voted on this issue with a positive decision that one MUST be a direct descendant of a Cherokee by blood on the 1902/1906 Dawes Rolls in order to enroll today. And further that non-Cherokee Freedmen were not and are not eligible to enroll. It is my opinion that Mr Russell is selective in his reportage of legal research, and while I think interested people should read his article, I also think the much superior resource is the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, which talks about the complete legal history rather than the selective history of the newspaper article.
