Why did the native Americans use "white" names? Two primary reasons: (1) On each roll (and the Cherokees had 37) it was required that the (English-speaking) enrolling agents identify the individual on a prior roll. The agents couldn't spell the native names in the English alphabet the same way on each enrollment. It was just easier to "assign" them an English name. (2) At the Mission schools, the missionaries had the same problem. Since the missions were being funded by eastern church members, they often suggested that the benefactor sponsor the education of one child-- who would be "given" the benefactor's name. Three examples: Elias Cornelius Boudinot (Buck Oowatee); Margaret Wilkerson (??) and Gardiner Green (Young Deer) As for a list of Cherokee names -- order Heritage Books Inc CD #2158: 6 volumes of "Only The Names Remain".
