Hi Sandy, I did a little more poking around and think I may have found some previous generations of Abshire's. However, you will have to do some research on this to make sure it is the right line. All it takes is a slip in one generation and then everything else is useless. The problem is that not all records show the person's actual first name, but instead just have initials or second names are used. I think the line is: Marion Turner Adshire, son of Josiah M (Marion?) Abshire, son of Jaboc C Abshire, son of Abraham Abshire, son of Ludwig Abshire, son of Peter Abshire (or other variations). (the connection between the last three from research done by others - sites are shown below) I checked the 1880 census (http://www.familysearch.org/) for Marion Turner's father Josiah M. and found only one record that was close. This was for a Marion (born in the appropriate time frame in Virginia). The census unfortunately only gave initials for the parents. The only other full name was a younger sister, Victoria. When I searched the Tennessee marriages (LDS records), I found a few entries - two for a J.M. Abshire (#1 - Reid Taylor in Montgomery Co. and #2 - Mary Allen Bell in Robertson Co.). It made sense (to me) that this was Josiah (Marion) Abshire since his oldest son from his first marriage was name Walter Taylor Abshire. Possibly, the Laura Bell living with them on the 1910 census was the mother of his 2nd wife Mary. There was also a marriage entry for a Victoria Abshire to Joseph Sanders in Montgomery Co. and on the 1910 census, there was a Joe Sanders (nephew) living with Josiah. I have shown the 1900 census for Victoria & Joseph Sanders below (age is right - birthplace wrong, but that is pretty much normal for census entries). I went back and checked the 1910 census for the Abshire's and Joe Sanders age was actually listed as 21, not 31 as I had written (a very bad 2 that at first glace looked like a 3). Below are census entries from 1850 - 1880 for what I think are for your Abshire line. Also, some marriages entries and a list of sites that hold Abshire information that may be of interest. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything online with research past the mid 1850s on this line, so you will have to find documentation to link the information e.g. obituaries, death registrations (parent's names may be recorded or full name of spouse), marriage records. LDS Family History Centres are in most major cities and although they may not have the information on-site, they have an amazing amount of genealogical information from all over the U.S. I checked their online catalogue and found quite a few entries for Franklin, Virginia, Montgomery, Tennessee and Todd, Kentucky. Films can be ordered for a small fee. The staff are normally very helpful. A list of locations is available on their website - http://www.familysearch.org/. Another alternative is to try to do some of your research locally. Most counties have libraries or research centres where you can search through records yourself. I think I may have found Mary (Bell) Abshire on an old census, but need to check a little more. Gets complicated because Phoebe's mother was an Abshire. http://www.alleylaw.net/ABSHIRE-L.html This is a message left on the Abshire Genforum Board by the owner of the above website - has a condensed list of the family.
